I fell in love with a puppy called Mona. What a great opportunity when Jacob Garchik (the doggie’s owner) and Oscar Noriega, the co-leaders of Banda De Los Muertos asked me to design their logo and promo pieces. It was too tempting, I had to draw her!
Would it be a good fit for Banda, why not? We all remember Nipper, the dog listening to a gramophone, for the HMV logo, “His Master’s Voice”. The band plays every month at Barbès in Park Slope, dogs can easily be a graphic representation of this neighborhood, as well as strollers, but that’s an other story.
And what about this amazing instrument, the sousaphone? The sousaphone is the flag of Banda, with its sound, but also its physical presence. I always love looking at it during the concerts, especially when Jacob plays it. He makes my favorite “toro” sound.
I wanted people from Brooklyn and Mexico to relate to this image. Mona and the sousaphone seem to be a good match. I wish them a long life together, with many variations and styles.
