The British essayist, novelist and screenwriter’s book and TV series “Ways of Seeing” declared war on traditional ways of thinking about art.
So of course I went to check on YouTube to see if I could watch the show and I found 4 episodes. They’re all fascinating, especially in his provocative way of psychoanalysing masterpiece paintings we all are aware of.
Here is an intriguing episode on women’s nude. I love the second part when John Berger gathered a group of women to talk about their impressions about these paintings. A great feminist, intimate discussion.
“Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at.” -John Berger
